Jai Ganesha…

One of the biggest festivals coming up in next few weeks is Ganesha festival, when millions of idols of lord Ganesha will be worshipped in the households. The artisans work day and night to fulfill this demand, the idols are prepared with clay and keep these idols ready in advance many of which are made to order. Many roadside stalls such as this will come up to display their work and help devotees buy these idols with an advances order or just over the counter.
Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated as it is the birthday of Lord Ganesha. The festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). Typically, the day usually falls between 20 August and 15 September, this year it comes on 23rd August 2009.

I was in Bangalore last year during Ganesh Chathurti. While it was wonderful to see all the idols coming up, especially near the Lal Bagh area, it was quite a downer to see that they were using all kinds of toxic paints instead of vegetable dyes. I hope the Government will work harder to prevent dumping of these toxic idols into the city's water tanks or 'lakes'.

Thanks...

@KC, Yes, there are such concerns that authorities are dealing with and have provided separate immersion facilities that are cleaned separately after the festivities are over...
