It is celebrated on the tenth day of the bright half of the Hindu month of Ashwayuja or Ashwina, and is the grand culmination of the 10-day annual festival of Dasara or Navaratri.

This is among the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar and comes as the finale of the nine-day festival, Navaraatri. This festival of victory is preceded by worship of Saraswati the Goddess of Learning and of Durgaa the Goddess of Strength. Grand processions of all Gods and goddesses are taken out in every town and village on this day, signifying the victory of the forces of righteousness over those of wickedness.

Various have been the names of the Goddess of Strength - Durgaa, Mahaa Kaali, Mahishasura Mardini etc., under which that supreme protectress of the good and the holy put to rout, time and again, the demoniac forces and established the supremacy of the righteous. Refer...

Banking on Locks ...

ING Vysya Bank, headquarters in Bangalore on M.G. Road has a display of different type of locks...

A lock puzzle is a type of mechanical puzzle. It consists of a lock with unusual or hidden mechanics. Such locks are sometimes called trick locks, because opening them is like performing a magic trick. A matching key may or may not be used in this trick. Lock puzzles have a long history. Other lock puzzles stem from the necessity to invent secure locks in the Middle Ages. Lock puzzles are closely related to puzzle boxes.

They are innovative and quite an artifacts...

Securing ones possessions' has long been a concern of people throughout the world. Mehendi ...

Mehndi (or mehendi or mehandi or mylanji) is the application of henna (Urdu: حنا) as a temporary form of skin decoration, most popular in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia as well as India. It is typically employed for special occasions, particularly weddings. It is usually drawn on the hands and feet, where the designs will last the longest due to the fact that it only penetrates the dead cells of the stratum corneum.
Henna paste is usually applied to the skin using a plastic cone or a paint brush, but sometimes a small metal-tipped jacquard bottle used for silk painting (a jac bottle) is used. The affected area is then wrapped with tissue, plastic, or medical tape to lock in body heat, creating a more intense colour on the skin. The wrap is worn overnight and then removed. The final colour is reddish brown and can last anywhere from two weeks to several months depending on the quality of the paste. More ...
The lance- shaped leaves from the bush are harvested, dried and then crushed to make the henna powder. Henna is used for hair dye, as a skin conditioner and as a reliever for rashes.

Colours of life.....

Working with colourful beeds and gemstones, a vendor on M.G.Road creates a quick yet beautiful necklace .

Gems are classified into different groups, species, and varieties. For example,
ruby is the red variety of the species corundum, while any other color of corundum is considered sapphire. Emerald (green), aquamarine (blue), bixbite (red), goshenite (colorless), heliodor (yellow), and morganite (pink) are all varieties of the mineral species beryl.

A gemstone is prized especially for great beauty or perfection so appearance is almost always the most important attribute of gemstones. Characteristics that make a stone beautiful or desirable are colour, unusual
optical phenomena within the stone, an interesting inclusion such as a fossil, rarity, and sometimes the form of the natural crystal. Diamond is prized highly as a gemstone since it is the hardest naturally occurring substance known and is able to reflect light with fire and sparkle when faceted. However, diamonds are far from rare with millions of carats mined each year.

Traditionally, common gemstones were classified into precious stones (cardinal gems) and semi-precious stones. The former category was largely determined by a history of ecclesiastical, devotional or ceremonial use and rarity. Only five types of gemstones were considered precious:
diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald, and amethyst.

wooden carving of lord 'Shiva'

Beautiful wooden carving of lord 'Shiva' in a showcase on M.G.road made out of Sandalwood...

Shiva is one of the
Trimurti (i.e "trinity"). In the Trimurti, Shiva is the destroyer, and Brahma is the creator and Vishnu is the preserver. Even though he represents destruction, Shiva is viewed as a positive force (The Destroyer of Evil), since creation follows destruction.

He destroys our imperfections in order to ensure our spiritual progress.
He destroys our illusions, desires and ignorance.
He destroys our evil and negative nature.
He destroys our old memories, so that we can move on with the movement of time.
He destroys our relationships, attachment, impurities, physical and mental wrong doings, the effects of bad karma, our passions and emotions and many things that stand between us and God as impediments to our progress and inner transformation.
And in the end when we have made sufficient progress, when we are ready and prepared, and when we are willing without any inner conflict, he destroys death.

Shiva is usually represented by the Shiva linga (or lingam), usually depicted as a clay mound with three horizontal stripes on it, or visualised as a blazing pillar. In anthropomorphised images, he is generally represented as immersed in deep meditation on Mount Kailash, his traditional abode. Refer...

Milking a cow at your doorstep...

Early morning one more doorstep delivery takes me to a bit surprize, fresh cow's milk delivered on demand... despite the era of packaged milk there are many takers for the fresh options..

Cow's milk is so ubiquitous that it doesn't even need a description. Whether poured on breakfast cereal, have it with your morning tea/coffee or enjoyed alone as a cold glass of milk, this beverage has become a staple diet that can be enjoyed year-round...

Cow's milk, the basis for all other dairy products, promotes strong bones by being a very good source of vitamin D and calcium, and a good source of vitamin K--three nutrients essential to bone health. In addition, cow's milk is a very good source of iodine, a mineral essential for thyroid function; and a very good source of riboflavin and good source of vitamin B12, two B vitamins that are necessary for cardiovascular health and energy production. Cow's milk is also a good source of vitamin A, a critical nutrient for immune function, and potassium, a nutrient important for cardiovacular health. Refer ..
