Eco friendly transport....

Bullock carts have been here for quite a few centuries, they almost become symbols of Indian culture and a must photo for any traveler…most of the urbanites hate having a bullock cart on the road as it blocks the traffic due to it’s size, speed and maneuverability…
On the other hand this is the most preferred transport for rural of semi urban area’s due to its affordability and wide range of use, in my childhood I had enjoyed the rides with my uncle ( an horticulturist) for visiting the markets, joyrides to village fairs and even to his farms…

The Sadhu...

In Hinduism, sadhu is a common term for an ascetic or practitioner of yoga (yogi) who has given up pursuit of the first three Hindu goals of life: kama (pleasure), artha (wealth and power) and even dharma (duty). The sadhu is solely dedicated to achieving moksha (liberation) through meditation and contemplation of God.

Sadhus are often sanyasi, or renunciates, who have left behind all material and sexual attachments and live in caves, forests and temples all over India. The word comes from the Sanskrit "to practice", referring to the practice of meditation. See sadhana.
A sadhu is usually referred to as baba by common people. The word 'baba' means father, or uncle, in most Indian languages. Sometimes the respectful suffix 'ji' may also be added after baba, to give greater respect to the renunciant. There are 4 or 5 million sadhus in India today and they are still widely respected, revered and even feared, especially for their
curses. It is also thought that the austere practices of the sadhus help to burn off their karma and that of the community at large. Refer...

What's in a number??

The vehicle license plates, commonly called number plates displayed at a street shop with various designs and styles...
All motorised road vehicles are tagged with a licence number in India. The licence plate number is issued by the district-level Regional Transport Office (RTO) of respective states - the main authority on road matters. The licence plates are placed in the front and back of the vehicle. By law, all plates are based on the Arabic (European) script, though many states violate this by writing the numerals in the local script. Other guidelines include having the plate lit up at night and the restriction of the fonts that could be used.
The President of India and state governors travel in official cars without licence plates. Instead they have the Emblem of India in gold embossed on a red plate. Refer..

Traditional Handicrafts...

These colourful wall hangining's made out of vetiver grass are attractive enought to catch your attention... the Handicraft products made from vetiver leaves include:
(i) handy accessories such as bags, hats, belts ,
(ii) containers such as baskets, pots, boxes, utility bowls,
(iii) decorating materials such as clocks, picture frames, lamp shades, dolls, animal figures, flowers; and
(iv) home appliances such as chairs, stools, room partitions, tables.
It has been well known since ancient times that vetiver possesses aromatic roots. A pleasant aroma is released from vetiver root dug from the soil and hanged in the shade. In India the dried roots are used to give fragrance to linen clothes while the root mass is used as a blind to cool down the heat of the summer, especially in northern India (Sastry, 1998). The blind, known as ‘Tatti’, is woven from the wiry, fibrous root of vetiver. The vetiver blind is continually doused with water throughout the day, turning the hot wind into a scented cooling breeze, which passes through the soaked vetiver blind, releasing a bitter-sweet aroma. The scented vetiver roots are also used for making fans, cloth hangers, and are mixed with other kind of flower scents and leaves for making sachets. Refer..

Flowers for Makar Sankranti...

The local Halasuru market was full of varieties of fresh flowers required for the celebration of Makar Sankranti festival celebrated y'day in the city...

One of the interesting facts associated with this Festive day is the famous Sankranti ‘sunbeam’ occurrence at the ancient Gavi Gangadeshwara Cave Temple in Gavipuram (in south Bangalore) dedicated to lord Shiva and is a protected monument.

In another confluence of faith and science, a unique phenomenon occurs here, every year, on this day. A beam of sun rays passes through the two windows to the south of the cave, facing the temple, and slides down through the horns of the monolithic statue of Shiva’s Nandi bull. Then, the sunbeams fade away, after touching the lingam. The sun rays do not enter the temple on any other day in this pattern. The time varies somewhat, but it always occurs around winter solstice. Reva..India's first electric car...

Reva, the two door hatchback; 2 adults, 2 children; top speed: 65 kmph, range: 80 km. Let's get going!!

The REVA Electric Car Company was incorporated in 1995 to manufacture environment friendly, cost effective electric vehicles for city mobility. REVA was designed after considerable market research across nine cities. Considerations such as low operational costs, low purchase prices, driving comfort and effortless parking in congested city traffic conditions were kept in mind while developing India’s first electric vehicle (EV) by the Maini Group.

It is a fully automatic (no clutch - no gears), two-door hatchback, easily seating two adults and two children. A small turning radius of just 3.5 metres makes it easy to park and manoeuver in difficult city traffic conditions. A full battery charge takes less than seven hours and gives a range of 80km. In quick-charge mode (two-and-a-half hours) 80% charge is attained, good enough for 65km. A full charge consumes just about 9 units of electricity. More...

Sheep Grazing....

While on a weekend drive to near by Hesarghatta lake some 40 kms away from the city, clicked this snap of 'sheep grazing' by a localite...

The Sheep and goat breeding is a big rural activity for living.. Sheep and goats are important species of livestock for India. They contribute greatly to the agrarian economy, especially in areas where crop and dairy farming are not economical, and play an important role in the livelihood of a large proportion of small and marginal farmers and landless labourers.

The livestock is maintained primarily on grazing and some supplementary feed like occasional groundnut or horse gram hulls feeds. Most grazing takes place in harvested fields or in forest areas, along roadsides, and on hill slopes. They are grazed eight hours a day; except in summer, grazing is avoided in very early hours.
